I can't really imagine a world without flowers. Really. I can't. Can you? I hope not. The rainbow of colors and fragrance and joy and beauty of something so fleeting would be lost forever. As we prepare the farm for next season the thought just came to me. What if there were no more flowers? Yesterday we mowed down all the dying flowers to begin the process of preparing the field for planting some of next seasons crops. Soon we will dig up the dahlias for storage. It's beginning to look a little barren. Could you imagine a world without flowers? What would it mean to you?
Well, honestly it would rip pieces of my soul apart-just like I love trees, plants, outdoors, nature-all those things fill my cup to the point of sheer bliss. Why is that? What they symbolize. What emotions they evoke. How they energize me. How they grace me with hope. And then, there's that other thing..... How I feel when I share my flowers with others.
Well this could get deep. If you heard me say this or read this on this website somewhere- you know I believe that flowers speak a language all their own- a type of expression that doesn't rely on spoken words. The colorful flower beauties I grow here on our little farm are grown with heartfelt love and deep affection so sharing them with others is not a meaningless act for me. If we have ever shared a conversation about flowers I'm sure my passion for growing them is evident.
When these flowers leave my hands, they've only just begun a more important journey. The hands we pass them off to are on a journey of their own as well.. Maybe it's one of love. Maybe it's one of forgiveness or healing. Maybe it's one of hope or joy. Or sometimes it's bringing peace to a grieving soul. Flowers are living and breathing. It's much more than just producing oxygen for us and all the other mammals on this planet we call home (plant respiration is complex by the way).
And much like that complexity, it's fair to believe that there are intricate details in a deeper level we don't understand in relation to how flowers make us "feel". Some like flowers more than others-I get that! Kind of like how you like some people more than others. Ha! Ha! But seriously- do you think we could really speak with the language of flowers if we weren't interconnected somehow? It's just like giving someone a hug- instead of touch we use sight to communicate our love and concern for others.
There are beautiful things that only flowers can convey. I think the Master wanted it that way. I think THAT is a wonderful mystery. And the miracle of flowers. I'm not sure how long I would last in a world devoid of flowers. And frankly I'm glad that it's not something I have to worry about.
