Will it be a September to remember?

We are already over a week into the month of September. Can you believe that fall is almost here? All the excitement of what is to come with fall is felt by many-football and other sporting events, pumpkins, fall festivals, and I could list so much more. For me, here at our little slice of heaven I think about the activities that get the farm ready for next season-like prepping the beds with compost, wondering if I was supposed to do another soil test this year, dreaming about the tulips and other bulbs coming shortly (actually this week! Eek!!), ordering seeds that I have yet to order, planning the layout for crops for next year, starting seeds inside for fall planting, doing to the direct seeding in the field for next years crops, hoping all those anemone and ranunculus corms I ordered come in and don't get cancelled. Ok, I think I am going to stop right there. I think I could go on and on. September is such an exciting time on the flower farm but also one where I sometimes think I am just about tuckered out and ready for a break. If I can just hold on a little longer the majority of the fall work will be done and I can rest just a bit as I wait with exciting anticipation of what the spring months will bring.

So now is a great time to think about what you want to see different in your gardens and landscape for next season. Fall is a great time to plant perennial shrubs and plants and trees. Of course I plant them during the entire year. I don't think there is one month that I have not planted something (it may not be the best time but sometimes that's the time I have). Regardless of when to plant this fall don't forget to add a layer of mulch. This mulch helps keep the plant cool in summer and warm in winter and also helps with keeping the roots from drying out. Don't forget to add a pop of color with some tulip, narcissus, or whatever spring flowering bulb suits your fancy. You'll be glad you added that color come spring-and it's ok to cut those flowers and bring inside if you like as well. Relish the joy of your hard work as you make it a September to remember. See you next time!
